Single girder overhead travelling crane

A single-girder top-running overhead crane is a type of lifting and material handling equipment consisting of a single bridge girder mounted on two end carriages. These cranes are used for handling loads in industrial, warehouse, and construction facilities.

Top-running overhead cranes are installed on and travel along crane runways. The travel wheels of the crane rest on rails mounted on runway beams. The structure of a single-girder top-running overhead crane consists of:

  • The bridge — a main girder on which the hoisting mechanism is installed.
  • End carriages to which the bridge is attached, supported by wheels running on the crane runway rails.
  • A hoisting mechanism, which for single-girder cranes typically consists of a manual or electric hoist. Among available options, the electric single-girder top-running overhead crane offers the most advantageous balance between cost and operational efficiency.
  • Electrical equipment comprising two or four geared electric motors that provide bridge travel along the crane runways.

Depending on the configuration, top-running overhead cranes may vary in rated load capacity, span, lifting height, duty classification and hoisting speeds.
